Mad City Dog Training Philosophy

Our instructors work with students and their dogs in a group class atmosphere.  Through class work we strive to help  our students develop leadership skills necessary for teaching desired behaviors. Our group class format gives us the opportunity to explain and demonstrate skills to the group and then assist individuals as needed in teaching the skills to their dogs.  We encourage all family members to attend class so that we have the opportunity to observe and improve each family member’s interactions with their dog.

We offer five 8-week sessions per year. Each session we offer approximately 30 classes. Foundation level classes are limited to an average size of ten dogs with two instructors. Advanced classes have fewer dogs and one instructor. Group classes are $120 per session for the first class and $110 for each additional class taken that same session.

Class times are available weekdays, during both the daytime and evening hours, and also on Saturday mornings.  Private lessons are also available during the day for an hourly rate.

We teach good canine behavior  using “Positive Reinforcement.” The focus is on letting the dog know when they are right rather than concentrating on mistakes.   The instant the desired behavior occurs, the action is reinforced with positive feedback to the dog.  Positive reinforcement stimulates dogs mentally; dogs learn how to learn.

Positive reinforcement is employed at every level of our training classes.  It is used to train everything from every day good manners to agility, obedience, flyball and conformation.

We use four basic types of positive reinforcement in training:

Verbal Praise - to let your dog know they've done a good job - "good dog!"

Physical praise - physical contact, such as petting, stroking, scratching, etc.

Food -  rewarding them with a treat.

Toys - engaging in a fun game by interacting with them with a toy.

Mad City Dog Training’s owner and several instructors are members of The Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) and attend annual APDT conferences.  As members of the APDT, we are dedicated to educating people about better and more humane dog training.  This is accomplished through positive reinforcement training techniques.  We believe this is the most humane way to train and is the most effective way to train dogs to learn faster, retain skills and enjoy the process.

The APDT is a professional organization of individual trainers who are committed to becoming better trainers through education.  The APDT was founded in 1993 by Dr. Ian Dunbar as a forum for trainers to associate with one another and to discuss topics of mutual interest.  It has since become a member-driven organization producing educational conferences in locations throughout the United States.

Membership has grown to over 5,000 members worldwide. The organization is a voice for pet dog trainers.  It offers a unique opportunity for professional networking and sharing of ideas through conferences, membership directory, newsletters, and seminars.

The APDT offers individual pet dog trainers a respected and concerted voice in the dog world. It continues to promote professional trainers to the veterinary profession and to increase public awareness of dog friendly training techniques.
